Day 10 of our epic road trip began at our campsite in Washington Park. I really, really love this place. These trees make me so happy.

The boys found a banana slug while they were playing outside. It was the biggest slug I have ever seen! We put it on our picnic table so they could get a closer look. Atticus decided to make a house for it.

After lunch, we left to catch the ferry to Friday Harbor to FINALLY see where Julie lives! She’s been here for several years now, and this was my first time getting to visit. It was also my first ferry ride. We drove the truck on the ferry so we would have a vehicle to drive around the island. We really enjoyed the ride and getting to see the other islands as we passed.

When we arrived in Friday Harbor, we made a stop by Julie’s boat to drop off her things. The kids were super excited to see her boat. They had never been on a sail boat before, much less had the chance to spend the night on one!

Then we walked around the cute little downtown area and went to dinner. We were starving!

After dinner, we drove around the island for a bit before landing at Dead Man’s Bay. It was gorgeous. You could see Canada across the water.

The beach here is a very coarse, rocky sand. The rocks are beautiful. I want to take them all home.

There is also tons of driftwood. The kids really enjoyed throwing huge pieces of driftwood back into the ocean.

While the kids were throwing rocks and wood into the ocean, Julie pulled this surprise out of her pocket. It’s a dark chocolate bar with bits of bacon and salt. She’s told me about this chocolate bar and how she always sees it at the store, but that it felt wrong to eat it without me. Now was our time to try it! It was surprisingly good! It had a very bacon-y flavor on the front end which was quickly overpowered by the flavor of dark chocolate.

We played on the beach for a while and then started to hike towards Lime Kiln. We were hoping to see whales along the way!

Logan and Atticus had made friends with a little girl while playing on the beach. They invited her and her Dad to go on the hike with us. While we were hiking, we came across a tide pool. The Dad immediately hopped down there with the kids and started teaching them about all of the creatures you can find in the tide pools. I have never played in tide pools, so it was fun for me too! We played with crabs, snails, anemones, and barnacles. Logan and Atti really liked the anemones!

The boys and I got separated from Julie and Lorelei for a bit. My phone didn’t work where we were and we had trouble finding them. By the time we did find them, the boys were all done with hiking and looking for whales, so we didn’t get to hang out at Lime Kiln for very long.

After our hike, we took the kids for ice cream and then all went back to the boat to crash. It was after 10pm when it finally got dark outside and we were pooped!
