This year we participated in the Big Latch On. Actually, we hosted the Big Latch On in Denton. This all started when I asked The Baby Ladies (my Momma group) if anyone would want to come with me to a Big Latch On location in Plano. We all started talking and decided that we should organize a Denton location. We only had a couple of weeks to throw our event together, so it wasn’t as big as it could have been, but that gives us something to plan for for next year’s Big Latch On!
If you aren’t familiar with it, here is some information from their website (biglatchon.org):
What is the Big Latch On?
Groups of breastfeeding women come together at registered locations around the world to all latch on their children at a set time. All the breastfeeding women and children are latched on for one minute at the set time and are counted by witnesses. The numbers are added up and we see if we can beat previous Big Latch On records or maybe even the world record. Last year’s record was 5,687 and the world record is 9,826!!
Aims of the Big Latch On
- Support for communities to identify and grow opportunities to provide ongoing breastfeeding support and promotion.
- Raise awareness of breastfeeding support and knowledge available in communities.
- Help communities positively support breastfeeding in public places.
- Make breastfeeding a normal part of the day-to-day life at a local community level.
- Increase support for women who breastfeed – women are supported by their partners, family and the breastfeeding knowledge that is embedded in their communities.
- Communities have the resources to advocate for coordinated, appropriate, and accessible breastfeeding support services.

I tried to take some pictures during our event. It was difficult because Logan was all over the place. He’s in a stage where he likes to grab hair and grab other babies’ faces, and since I don’t want to have the 7 month old that beats up other kiddos, I tried to keep him wrangled in. One of the Dad’s that came out to support us (and to be a witness) took pictures for me during the actual latch on.

As of this writing, the Big Latch On website states that there were 8,862 children latched on in 626 locations across 23 countries. We beat last year’s record and were only about 1,000 off from beating the world record. I am so happy that we were able to be a part of such a special event to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week! Also, I am so thankful to my Baby Ladies for pushing me to put this event together. Breastfeeding has become something that I am very passionate about and being able to sit on the square with my friends while we nurse our babies at the same time that thousands of other babies were being nursed was an experience I will never forget. 🙂
