Last night we decided that we are going to go with Nana and Pop Pop to Mississippi to visit Granny and Papaw. We are super excited! Problem is, they are going next week. Yes, this is very spontaneous of us. Eek! Trying to plan a trip with a 6 month old in just a few days has the Momma’s head spinning. Logan and I have done an overnight trip to Arkansas, but this will be the first time we will be gone for nearly a week.
.
The biggest thing I’m trying to figure out is diapers. As most of you know, we cloth diaper full time around here. Since we are going to be gone for more than just a few days, we would have to do laundry while we are traveling. I’m not sure how I feel about that. Part of me thinks it wouldn’t be such a big deal, but we would have to make sure Granny and Papaw are okay with us using their washer. And, I know that differences in water pH can affect the detergent and the diapers. I seriously don’t want to risk messing things up and come home with a boat load of stinky dipes! I’m also not sure if we will have the time to do diaper laundry. I mean, in all reality, it doesn’t take that much time, but I will need to be around to start the load, and run it through a couple of rinses.
.
So, last night I stayed up all night researching options and have narrowed it down to two (other than just sucking it up and taking our cloth). Maybe other cloth Mommas that read this can help us make the decision!
.
Disposables-
We are not open to using regular disposables. We used Huggies for the first week of TinyFat’s life while we were waiting for the cord stump to fall off and the meconium to pass. They made his little bottom break out. And we were even using the Huggie’s “Natural” diapers. I don’t want to risk it again.
I have looked into a green disposable (what an oxymoron!) and found a brand out of Europe called Nature Babycare. They are not made with plastic, fragrance, dye, or chlorine. The coolest part about these diapers is that their absorbency comes from NON-genetically modified corn instead of sodium polyacrylate (super absorbent polymer, or SAP). Sounds like a pretty good option if we wanted to go the strictly disposable route. And, with the Nature Babycare, we can get 124 diapers on Amazon for $42. That’s not horrible. (But I would totally rather use that $42 to buy more cloth… I am such a cloth crack head.)
.
Cloth Hybrid System-
There are several cloth hybrid systems out there that allow you to use a cloth cover with a disposable insert. Off the top of my head there are gDiapers, Flip, and GroVia. I looked into and compared Flip and Grovia. I chose these 2 because I have used and loved Bumgenius (makers of Flip) so I trust them. And we actually own 4 GroVia covers and some of their cloth inserts… and also love them. Most of the blogs and review sites that I came across said they are pretty comparable, they just fit a little differently.
Since we already own some GroVia covers, I have chosen to have it be my hybrid option. The website claims that they are biodegradable and compostable. The inserts are free of chlorine, dye, fragrance, and plastic. And we still get to use our super cute covers. The bad news is that they are made with a little bit of SAP (3 grams instead of 10-20 grams like regular disposables) and they are going to cost a little bit more than the ‘green’ disposable. If I try them and like them, I can order them in bulk from Costco and they will actually be cheaper than the Nature Babycare… but I don’t want to order them in bulk right off the bat incase I don’t like them. But it’s something to think about since we are planning on going on more trips in the near future. Oh, and something that could be considered good or bad news… I will need to purchase a few more covers. Like I said, I have 4 of them, but we will need a few more to get us through the trip. Which is actually exciting for me because they recently came out with their new prints and I have been waiting for a reason to buy them… (there’s that cloth crack head again!). After the trip over, we can use the covers with our cloth inserts, so buying a couple of extra covers in no big deal.
.
Sooo… these are our options. Who knew that I would be losing sleep over which diapers to take on a short trip to see family. Jeez… how my life has changed in the matter of a year! 🙂 (I wouldn’t change it for anything, though!!)
