Logan and I went to our first MeetUp group event today. I had an absolute blast, and I’m pretty sure that Logan did too.
This morning when we got up and the weather was cold and rainy, I almost decided that we didn’t need to leave the house. I’m so glad I didn’t use the weather as an excuse to not get out and meet new people.
The MeetUp group I joined is the Crunchy Mamas of N. Texas. They are basically a group of girls who believe in some of the same things Chris and I believe in: natural birthing and parenting, using cloth diapers, babywearing, alternative healthcare… you know? All that hippie stuff that we do. The South branch of the Denton Library held a ‘Mommy and Me’ yoga class in one of their meeting rooms and a group of the Crunchy Mamas signed up to go. I had done yoga a few times in my life, but didn’t really know what to expect from a Mommy and Baby class.
The class wound up being way more fun that I thought it was going to be. I am not a fan of working out, but if it could be like that every time, I would work out multiple times a day! We started with laying the babies on blankets in front of our yoga mats and working through some yoga poses to help re-strengthen our core and pelvic floor muscles. Logan thought it was hilarious to watch me move into the different poses. Plus, when we would transition into a pose on the floor, he would get lots of kisses. After working on ourselves for about 30 minutes, we moved to incorporating the babies into our poses. I don’t know all of the names of the poses, but I know that we did a modified chair pose and bridge pose with the babies. We also worked on some stretching while holding our babies. Next, we worked on some stretching exercises with the babies. Again, Logan seemed to like this part. He especially liked when I would make his right hand touch his left foot and vice versa. Apparently crossing limbs across the body (also called crossing the midline) helps with brain development and can even kick start early crawling. This makes sense because I know a lot of the kiddos in my classroom have issues with crossing the midline. It’s something that is worked on a lot with our occupational therapist. The brain is so interesting…
Anyway, we finished up with a little baby massage and the yoga instructor dimmed the lights and most of the mothers laid on their sides and nursed their babies. Who am I kidding? That was TinyFat’s favorite part. Anything having to do with food! After yoga class, the Crunchy Mamas invited TinyFat and me to eat lunch with them. We went to a little cafe in Denton and had some yummy lunch. I guess TinyFatBaby takes after his BigFatMomma cause I’m pretty sure the food was my favorite part of the day.
I enjoyed hanging out with them so much, that I signed up to go to another MeetUp. Next Thursday, tFb and I will be going on a hike at a local nature preserve with the Crunchy Mamas.
I also signed up for 2 more MeetUp groups. One is a playgroup called the Tattooed Hippie Pirate Mommas and the other is the DFW Natural Parenting group. The playgroup had the most awesome name ever, and though I don’t have any tattoos, I like pirates and am kind of a hippie. Ha ha… kinda. And the Natural Parenting group was a given. I have already RSVPed for an event for each of their groups. Hopefully we have as much fun on our next events!
Tomorrow we are going to a MeetUp for the DFW Cloth Diaper Group. We’ve never been to one, so I’m hoping that it’s fun. And then since we are going to be in the area, we plan on eating lunch with Daddy! I’m hoping Logan decides to sleep well tonight since it’s going to be such a busy day. Maybe the yoga will help him… *fingers crossed*
