Well, we’ve done it. We have officially made the decision to homeschool for Logan’s kindergarten year. We’ve pretty much known that we were going to homeschool but I didn’t feel we were 100% committed until we picked out our K curriculum and pressed the order button on the website. Plus, Logan had wavered in his decision to homeschool. A couple of times he told me he wanted to go to school so he could ride the bus with the neighbors, haha. He changed his mind when I told him that he would have to stay there and wouldn’t be part of his super awesome homeschool group any longer.

I have tried to be real with him about the differences in going to school versus home education–I don’t want him to be scared of going to school or think that public school is bad– because it’s not! We don’t know what the future holds. He may choose to go to school at some point in the future or our circumstances may change and he might be required to go to school. We just feel like homeschooling is the best choice for our family for right now–and we’re really lucky that Logan agrees!

So, after months of reading all about every curriculum available and talking with parents in our HS group, I was finally able to narrow our choices down to a few. Then I got lost in a sea of reviews on homeschooling blogs, youtube, and message boards and finally just had to close the computer and make the choice that I felt was best for Logan and our family. Choosing curriculum has by far been the most difficult part of this whole process. I am not very good at making decisions… especially when I feel overwhelmed with options! And even now after I’ve made the choices and bought the curriculum, my perfectionist brain keeps trying to make me think that I haven’t made the right (perfect) decision. I just keep trying to remind myself that if something isn’t working, we can always change or supplement it. And even more importantly…that he’s just 5 and kinder is supposed to be fun.

Our main curriculum is a literature based program called Build Your Library. I ordered our spines (the main books) and some of the supplemental books earlier this week and they’ve started coming in the mail. It’s like Christmas every day! Our main program covers literature, social studies, art, and science and the Kindergarten year is focused on learning all about our world. I’m really excited about it! I also picked up a copy of Handwriting Without Tears– an awesome multi sensory handwriting program that I have used in the past. Logan has been struggling with writing and all things fine motor so that’s one of our main goals this year! I chose All About Reading for our reading curriculum– because I felt like I needed a curriculum to lay it all out for me. I *could* piece a curriculum together… but I don’t want to. Same with math… I could follow the Kindergarten TEKS and create my own lessons, but with 3 kiddos, I don’t feel like I have enough time and I want this to be as easy and as enjoyable as possible– for not just Logan, but the rest of us too!

Here are our first few books… more photos to come as more things come in the mail!
